Description: The results of the Large Group Medical Claims Study will be presented. Twenty-six insurers participated and nearly 200,000 claims were studied. Factors of the study included plan type, deductible level, hospitals versus other charges, age and gender of claimant, diagnosis, and ZIP code. Description: The Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) and Society of Actuaries (SOA) engaged RGA Reinsurance Company (RGA) to undertake a research project on level premium term life insurance products with a particular focus on the magnitude and impact of the “shock lapse” at the end of the level premium period. This project is similar to the SOA-sponsored research completed by RGA in 2014 for USA business.

Description: This is the SOA 1991 large claims database. Please see the SOA website experience studies for group health for further information about the specifications for this database. The Committee on Health Benefit Systems Research is pleased to announce the availability of the 1991-92 Group Medical Insurance Large Claims Database. The database includes more than 171,000 claims of $25,000 or more, representing over $10 billion in total charges. Fields include diagnosis 3digit ICD-9 code, type of coverage HMO, PPO, Indemnity, etc., claimant status employee or dependent, and charges split into hospital and non-hospital, in addition to claimant age and gender.

Description: The Society of Actuaries SoA developed this research project to repeat and expand upon its “Group Medical Insurance Large Claims Database Collection and Analysis” study, which was published as a monograph in August of 1997. The general purpose of these studies is to discover and analyze factors affecting claim incidence rates and the distribution of claim sizes. This is the report for the database.
